Background:
Sexual Harassment Training is now a required part of California
business . . . and for good reason.
The Theory Behind
California Law AB 1825
AB 1825's legislative history provides some explanation of
the law's rationale. The statute was sponsored by Assemblywoman
Sarah Reyes. Her basic argument was that current laws, while
prohibiting sexual harassment, have not done enough to eliminate the
problem. Reyes notes that during the 2002-03 fiscal year, 4,231
sexual harassment cases were filed with the Department of Fair
Employment and Housing (DFEH), totaling 22 percent of all cases
filed. The impact of sexual harassment on businesses is significant,
Reyes argued. Harassment costs the average Fortune 500 company
$6.7 million per year in indirect costs alone. Training helps
reduce those costs. According to the Hartford Business Journal,
"Most legally sophisticated companies provide such training to all
supervisory and non-supervisory employees. That's the smart thing
for small and large employers to do to minimize their legal exposure
to [sexual harassment] claims."
Some of the significant benefits of
this program are as follows:
-
Complete third party
administration and management. IMS/Harbeck Group handles
all support, enrollment, administration, archiving and
documentation, professional analysis,
and course completion verification.
-
Course is compliant with
California Assembly Bill AB
1825, signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on
September 29, 2004.
-
Wide audience success.
Course style uses scientific learning strategies to achieve high
comprehension and high retention. Pre-course and post-course
assessment accurately documents and measures success rates.
-
Extraordinary high
completion rates. Many
firms can actually achieve
100% completion
rates--virtually unheard of completion rate with traditional or
computer-based courses. (This
might sound like hype but I can explain this to you and show you
the data.)
-
Exceptional learning and
comprehension. Measured learning scores consistently
improve by 15%. Final scores consistently exceed 90-100%. "Over
learning," techniques combined
with 100% remediation (real-time reinforcement) drum home
the personal and financial responsibilities
associated with improper office conduct. Our
goal is building lasting
employee cooperation and
teamwork.
-
Independent, private
attitudinal measure of the sexual harassment climate.
Employee survey results are warehoused independently from their
personal identification. Results are assessed and summarized by a
professional sexual harassment prevention expert.
Trouble spots are identified and preventative intervention, if
appropriate, will be recommended.
-
Tiny footprint.
Overwhelmed HR managers are generally
surprised to learn that they have very little to do
other than provide me with a list of students. I tell them to take
the credit for whatever goes well. :)
In the meantime we automate as much as we can and do all the
dirty work behind the scenes. We
have an on call pager number for 24/7
support. HR administrators can go online at any point and get
live, printer friendly progress reports. Average completion time
for all 10 modules is 55-120 minutes. Most managers I've talked
with seemed pleased by the minimal disruption of their staff
work. Training administrators like the fact that they can run a
group of new employees through the system every few months with
just a few minutes of preparation.
